Care of Felt

We want you to get the most value and longest use from your handmade alpaca felt product.

Store your slippers or other felt product with lavender bags /sachets - they smell great and help keep moths and other creepy crawlies at bay. Cedar wood is also excellent for this.

Our products are rinsed in a felting finish at the end of the felting process which assists in protecting them.

As our products are naturally dirt & odour repellent you will find that you very rarely, if ever, need to clean them.

FELT SCARVES AND GARMENTS

If washing is required it has to be done by hand:

  • Use luke-warm water with olive oil soap or liquid wool wash.

  • Submerge your felted item and leave it to soak for a few minutes.

  • Gently swish your felted item through the water a few times.

  • Rinse thoroughly using same temperature water, and same method.  A slurp of vinegar will help to restore the pH of the fibres.

  • Do not forcibly rub or agitate the product or it may shrink.

  • You can remove excess water and speed up the drying process by placing your felt item on “spin only” in your washing machine for around 5 -8 minutes.

  • DO NOT USE RINSE AND SPIN CYCLE  OR WASH CYCLE  FOR THIS.

  • DO NOT USE WASHING MACHINE or TUMBLE DRIER TO WASH YOUR FELT PRODUCT.

FELT HATS

Most of our felt hats (top hats, mini top hats, derbys and fedoras) have been stiffened with shellac so that they keep their shape. They can be reshaped using a steam from a steam iron then when heated, reshape the brim or body of the hat with your hands. Take care to keep your hands away from the steam, when using the iron or steamer.

If your hat gets lint, dog hair or dust on it, you can use a clean, soft clothing brush to gently remove it. Please do not attempt to wash your hat. If you accidentally spill something on your hat, you can gently dab it with a damp cloth and it should come out.

If your hat has not been stiffened, you can follow the care instructions for felt scarves and garments.

FELT SLIPPER CARE

If you do accidentally spill something on your slippers or soil them, you can easily spot-clean them with some natural soap and a damp cloth. Rub gently and the stain should come out. From time to time, you can remove grit from inside your slippers by using a vacuum cleaner. Just use the bare tube for this.

We no longer recommend complete submersion in a hand wash due to a change in the adhesive we use on our soles.

NEVER USE THE WASHING MACHINE TO WASH YOUR SLIPPERS – THE AGITATION WILL MAKE THEM SHRINK.

The enclosed linen twine is a little repair kit for the leather soles. You will most likely not need to use it but we include it so that you can get the most wear out of your slippers.

You may wish to wipe the leather soles of your slippers with a damp cloth from time to time to keep them looking their best.
